I grow a lot of species Dends. I am aware of the culture sheets , and I grow them that way I simply told what went on with mine , something triggered the blooming 2 times , they were not watered . I do not consider a low of 50 that cold .

Yes! For my first couple of years with orchids, I did what most nubees do and I over watered. Since then I have learned to let most of my Dendrobium's get quite dry, with just an occasional misting in winter. When they start to respond to the longer days and increased temps of spring, only then will I start to water and fertilize. My two D. farmeri are still resting.

When you say "most of my Dendrobium's get quite dry" I hope you mean the deciduous ones! The others don't want to be dry, just cool.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

I moved it to under the trellis facing shouth now, since it starts to be warmer here. So it went through a dry spell and now exposed to more sunlight. I hope at least it will not die on me. When should I water it if I don't see any bud at all, because I think it may die of "starving" when the temp increases.

anosum blooming
The buds started opening thismorning - only 3 open so far - have about 6 or 8 on two canes - can't smell anything as of yet - sort of a bright pink color with darker center - petals pointed - am so excited - have to figure out how to send pics - my dendrobium aggregatum also has new flower type spikes coming out of the middle of the pseudobulbs for the first time ever - got 3 years ago and has only put out new growths - never watered it one time this winter so it worked..thanks for your help with the dendrobiums...k

The scent will develop as the flowers mature. Be patient!

I had mine blowing mid Feb, it's still blooming on one cane. There normally bloom at this time till March in Asia. In the month of Jan till Feb the tropic is experiencing a very hot and dry spell and the night temp is very much lower than the day time, this change signal then to produce bud and flower. I just love them even though there bloom once a year. There smell nice too.

I have two that blossom faithfully and one that has blossomed once (from a keiki) and the three have all different scents. All are pleasant - one is sort of perfumy, one is the raspberry you mention and the third (the keiki) has no scent that I remember.

Ross, I am very interested in exploring this dry spell. Which dendrobiums require it? and when do you start back with watering and fertilizing?
