Dendrobium draconis
No credit to me for the blooms...I've been trying to find one of these for a while, so I was pretty happy about seeing one at the TAOA show this weekend - the guy selling them (Jan Smid, from JS Orchids) is a new vendor in the area, and specializes in south-east and south asian species.
The fragrance is sublime - tangerines and cream. My mom thinks all these nigro-hirsute dendrobiums look the same, and wonders why I buy so many....
Personally I find the architecture and the red veining of this species incredibly interesting.

Beautiful and intricate looking flower. Tangerines and cream - what a wonderful combination.

Stunningly beautiful! I also love the nigro-hirsute dendrobiums - so I understand your weakness completely!

LOOK OUT! It's starting to breath fire!
Couldn't resist with a name like draconis. I agree, the architecture and veining of this flower is gorgeous.
Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for looking, everyone! It's bare-root right now, so I'm hoping the warming weather and good sun will help it get re-established quickly.
Shakkai - nigro-hirsutes are wonderful, aren't they! There aren't enough hybrids out there in this group..it's the only section from which I'm willing to buy hybrids - I know I know, I'm a snob! (that's what limited space does to you!)

Thanks Becca!
Steve - nigro-hirsutes/formosae dendrobiums all have little black hairs on the canes (nigro-hirsute = black-hair) with the exception of dendrobium senile, which has white hairs!
They're usually white, yellow or green, with distinctively striking orange or red splashes in the throats. They come in many shapes and sizes, but the great thing is that a majority of them are quite small and compact. I don't know why, but I find this section of dendrobiums really cool and interesting. Maybe it's the red and white combo...I am canadian after all My favorite species in the group is probably either draconis, or tobaense.
H&R carries many formosae hybrids so you might want to check em out! I got my Dend Lori's Star as well as Frosty Dawn from them.
In terms of fragrance, only a few are fragrant. Draconis and christyanum are the ones I can think of off the top of my head. I have Peng Seng (tobaense x cruentum) which smells slightly bad (although it's quite faint).

I thought these looked familiar! Youre right about H&R having lots of these, but I guess I have always called them "Formosum types." I had never heard them called the "nigro-hirsute types" before which threw me. Thanks for the info! I might have to take a little trip down to H&R soon.....
