Dendrobium Jairak Spider no.520 x discolor not flowering Male
Default Dendrobium Jairak Spider no.520 x discolor not flowering

Hi everyone,

I was hoping I can get some advice on how to get my dendrobium to flower.

I bought this Dendrobium Jairak Spider no.520 x discolor back in January 2023 and it grows like a oversized bamboo weed.

I got it in spike so I know how the flowers look like, and from two old canes and a baby it grew into this monster with the most delicious foliage. Some, folks told me it may not be getting enough sun, however it has growth lights and the minute it's warm enough it lives in the garden under full sun (which it loves). It gets watered and fertilizer twice a week and kept in very warm temperatures.

So I don't know why, why, why it doesn't want to do the thing 😅

I don't know for sure, so here are some conjectures.

What is the day length when it's under lights? Too long a day length in winter might also inhibit flowering. I would try to give no more than 10-11 hours of light in winter.

I know this may be hard for you to believe, but it looks like it's not getting enough light intensity. Midsummer sun in northern Europe is much dimmer than close to the Equator. I don't know where it was originally grown. Perhaps they used supplemental lighting all year. If you go to orchidspecies.com and look up Den. discolor you can read this:
This plant if not blooming needs more light. In nature it always grows in exposed high light conditions.

The plant looks sooo healthy. Right now the sun here is so intense! I wish I had it here in Thailand. LOL
