When do you bring Dendrobium Stratiotes in the house
Default When do you bring Dendrobium Stratiotes in the house

Hi

I bought this Dendrobium Stratiotes this year. So far it's doing great. It have pushed out couple new growths and looks like it will push out couple more. It's still very active now. When you do you bring it in the house? I'm growing in Socal backyard and no greenhouse.

Thank you in advance
Tony

I bring things in when there are cool nights and cool days.

This species is definitely a warm-grower, coming from low elevations of western New Guinea, and tropical islands of Indonesia. (Nearly all of the antelope-type Dendrobiums tend to be warm-growers) So it wants temperatures similar to a Phalaenopsis, but with a lot more light. Southern California? I would bring it in about a month ago. Some nights have been getting down into the 40's F and that's really too cold for this baby. The warm days we have been having no doubt at least partially compensated for the cold nights, but that's changing, there will still be a few warmer days, but it's definitely cooling off. So bring it in, much better to prevent problems than to try to cure them after you have pushed it too far.

Thank you for your inputs. It's still pushing out new growth. I thought it likes where i put it next to neighbor's brick fence and pond. Our backyard is facing West so it gets morning sun light and heater is on now. Would it be ok if I leave it next to the house under patio?
When I bring it in, what's ideal temp or when I can bring it out?

I'd keep it in until night temps get at least consistently 55 deg F. 60 would be better. Where it comes from, nighttime lows hardly ever get below 70, they can adapt to lower than that (your house probably gets cooler than that at night) but 40's F probably not. You got away with it because weather was so dry. But you're pushing your luck. Humidity is back and we could get rain which would give you cold-and-wet, a bad combination.
