Den. hibiki, emergency operation

i moved my D hibiki to the wardian and i was just admiring the general loveliness and adjusting the clip to hold the plant where and how i want it in the case. and i noticed this lump...

i thought it might be a keiki stuck in the old sheath and i geeeeently peeled it a bit to see it is a new spike!!!! but jammed into the stem and stuck. so i got a needle and i split the sheath and really gently pulled the spike away from the stalk and it appears to be free!!

Mine is a super keiki machine... Do these need cool temps to bloom?

I’m gonna go with no. Because it has not been cold here since 2016

Nope... actually, it grows on the warm side (with no rest period)... Parents are Den. bracteosum and Den. laevifolium, both relatively warm growers. For me, it's a greenhouse baby... but also a flower machine. Not sure that I have had any keikis from it. I don't fertilize much... I wonder if over-fertilizing could trigger keikis. Maybe put it on a diet???

It’s a really fun little plant.

Before I got the little case I used to hang it right above the D bracteosum. It is pretty much always in flower

I've been growing it indoors during the winter, and brought it out in May. Then the temps dropped down into the mid to low 50s at night for a week or two.. and mine began to keiki soon after. Thought the cooler temps may have stressed the plant. Actually, my Den nobile hybrid had a second flush of blooms after that brief cool down (some flowered and turned into keikis).

I tend to fertilize generously. Maybe I will put it on a diet...
