That is one gorgeous plant! Looking at that cane, it probably is giving its all this year. Expect to see new growth starting soon. That's what's so cool about those deciduous Dens. They bloom seemingly out of nowhere, on canes that look dead. Then, the new sprouts show up. But don't ever cut an old cane until it shrivels to a skinny brown twig. (like, REALLY for sure dead) Because even a rather marginal-looking cane can surprise you.

I was about to have the same question regarding shriveled canes on my Unicum. It is in bloom and working hard on a beautiful new growth. Nothing to worry about it seems. Thanks for clearing everything up!

I am ever the eternal optimist, so pretty much every day I stick my nose in any bloom in the chance that it may surprise me with something.

I did catch a very faint citrus aroma from mine today, very fleeting but it was there. Might have been a bit floral/citrusy but there was definitely something! I may have gotten it at the right time of the day or maybe it needed a few weeks to build up to fragrance. Now looking forward to new growth to build up for blooms again next year!
