Culture question on Den. Hawaii stripes
Default Culture question on Den. Hawaii stripes

Hi,

I wonder if anyone grows Dendrobium Hawaii stripes and have any tips on flowering it. I've had it for a few years but it has never spiked.

I grow it in bark, gets watered/fertilizer year round, and it is sitting by a south-facing window. Perhaps it needs more sun? The only plant I wasn't able to bloom inside my home was Laelia finckeniana... Maybe this plant also needs to be placed outside and receive direct, Georgia summer sun to bloom (and get fried...)?

I am not an expert, but generally if I treat my plants to well they tend to grow plenty but flower less.

Cut the water a little bit, or even full stop for a while. That could be suitable during a colder period. Stop fertilizing.

I think you will get better suggestions from the experts on the board soon

I can't tell from your photo what type of dendro it is, but maybe it needs a winter rest (i.e., cooler, dryer and no fertilizer) to bloom. The plant certainly looks large enough to bloom.

I took a peek at its ancestry which is mostly from the Latouria and Phal sections.

Both generally want bright, filtered light, maybe a tad less than Cattleyas. I would try cutting off the fertilizer during the cooler, winter months and reduce watering during that time as well. If you can give it a month or two of cooler temperatures, it might help too.

Here's some links from the AOS on both sections:
Den. Phals
Latouria Dens

And link to Orchidroots for its ancestry:

Thanks for the info.

I have many latouriate Dens and Den phals that bloom next to it. They all seem perfectly happy without a winter's rest. That's one of the reasons why I'm frustrated with Den. Hawaii stripes... it's not like the others! oy vey.

I'll try giving it a rest next winter...!
