Cypripedium species (native ladyslippers) - Orchid Board

Anyone growing these? I would like to include some in my backyard renovation, but not sure of their needs. I am growing in hardiness zone 3a.

What are you growing, where are you growing, how are you growing!

I bought a "very expensive" Cypripedium from Kuhlman's last year and it came back this year! They are apparently very winter hardy and they are supposed to come back each spring in a larger clump than the year before. There were quite a few OSA members selling them at the June meeting and most of them went very quickly!

One of the guys even has some of the pink, speckled ones growing at his house (It could be a species too), but he was selling them for about $50 each and only had a couple. Too bad, because they were beautiful!!

Hello Oscarman,

I live near Edmonton and grow quite a few species of
Cypripedium as well as a few hybrids. Here is part of my list: C. pubescens, reginae, calceolus, macranthos, tibeticum, guttatum, yatabeanum, X Alaskanum, acaule. My hybrids include: Michael, Gisela, Aki, and hotei-atsumorianum X calceolus.

Welcome to the Orchid Board! My native lady slipper adventure is on hold for now due to front and backyard renovations. I will be sure to seek some of your expertise once I have a yard to plant in.

There is a Canadian Plant Project in the works you may be interested in, I'll send you a PM about it.

Wow! Double-bind!
I envy you guys for being able to grow cyps in your yard

BUT I sure do not envy the weather that you have to live with!

But I have grown both
C. reginae and C. calceolus parviflorum in pots here in sunny

central coastal California!

I have only recently (2005) gotten back into trying and have a C. reginae and a C. kentuckiense in my frig for the winter rest.
They are only 2 years old.

C. kentuckiense....now there is a species I would LOVE to grow - so beautiful.

t-man, yes we can have some great weather here! The seasonal change is really quite nice though. What's a little -35°C once in awhile!
