Not the best pic, but this is Sidney.

Sidney arrived a year ago as a single fan with a tiny side shoot. The package had got frosted, and the small shoot died quite soon The fan lost its leaves one by one, and just as I was resigned to losing it, it threw a small shoot, which is now flowering. PLus there are 4 new fans emerging from the base. There would have been 5 but a drip of cold water hit a fan one night and it rotted.

Still, I have great hopes for next year!

This one's a cool grower, I think.
It's beautiful.
How do you grow it with that southern spain heat in summer?

Damn. Whatever you do don't tell Sidney. I'd hate it to worry.

It recovered from its chilling and rebirth to endure a 43C summer......

No need to worry, it's not a cool grower.

One of the species in its background, Phrag. schlimii is found in mountainous tropical areas, but I don't believe the species is confined to true "cool" areas. And in cultivation, it will grow and flower just fine in intermediate to warm conditions. They might not like extreme heat, but as long as they're kept moist/wet, they'll tolerate it.

On the other hand, the other parent species, Phrag. longifolium is a widespread and adaptable species which can definitely handle hot temperatures without a problem, and it'll often impart this characteristic in its offspring.

I will add, though, that heat will affect the quality of the blooms. Hot temperatures usually result in more bland, faded colors, and conversely, flowers that develop in cooler temperatures tend to last a bit longer (not that individual phrag flowers are long lasting to begin with) and have deeper, more intense coloration.
