In the recent thread on transitioning orchids outside it was mentioned that some Paphs need warmer conditions than others. I'm in the process of putting my plants out, and wonder if this plant is one that is ok as long as it doesn't take a frost or if it needs warmer temps? Thanks!

I am curious, what orchids are you putting out this early?

While Cymbidium & Aussie Dendrobiums can go out a little earlier, I never put Catts, Paphs & Vandaceous out till Memorial Day.

I believe that the paphs that are called cool growing are those decending from Indian paphs, like Druryi, Spiceranium, Fairrieanum.

For the sake of clarity, I think it's also important to mention that temperature "tolerance" and "preference", which is where good growth occurs, can be very different, depending upon the plant.

I suggest that waiting for outdoor conditions to be "correct" for the plants is better that moving them out as soon as it might be tolerable.

Absolutely Ray, and I'm trying to balance the welfare of my plantecwith my own sanity. A couple of the areas of my house which housed plants over the winter are due for a little work, and my wife's insistence that these projects get started is growing faster than any plant possibly can. So my policy at the moment is " do no harm".
