Any good fungicide for seedlings?
Default Any good fungicide for seedlings?

I have read how some members did well with seedlings without the help of any spray, but I need some good spray. I'm an indoor grower, so nothing too strong like commercial grade.

My paph seedlings are losing battle to brown rots.
The larger ones are doing fine, but the smallest of the group are all about to go.

I would like to have a good fungicide handy so I will spray my seedlings in the future trials.

Tell me what you use and how efficient the result is.

Thanks!

I use Thiomyl on all my seedlings and mature plants as a general preventive. I have even soaked newly deflasked seedlings in the solution. Its a systemic and has worked very well for me in my indoor conditions.

See if you can get some Oxidate RTU, or as it is now called, BioSafe Disease Control. It's about 0.1% hydrogen peroxide, stabilized with peroxyacetic acid, so even though it is 1/30 the concentration of drugstore peroxide, it stays active unTil it dries. And it has zero phytotoxicity.

Thank you very much for the info.

By the way, is Thyomyl safe for humans?

Not really.

MSDS lists the active ingredient as a SARA Title III immediate acute hazard.

Thiomyl is an alternative for Cleary's 3336 - mentioned as a "cure" here for many rot issues:
Orchid Diseases

I should clarify that I spray on my open balcony, allow plants to dry completely and then return all the plants indoors.

Actually, Cleary's is just a different brand name for the same product.

I use sulphur spray - not pretty, but does the job, and totally safe. It's better for preventing rot than curing it.

Just an editorial comment here:

There is absolutely no reason to treat seedlings immediately when they are deflasked. Coming from a sterile environment, they are carrying no bacteria or fungal spores, so if they have problems, the issue is something wrong with their cultural conditions.

Holy cow! That sounds scary!
Sometimes I wonder what kind of strong chemicals come with my orchids that have been grown in the commercial growers.

Will washing the plant down with water be enough to dissolve any residues on the plant surface??

I have a bottle from HD that is rose 3 in 1.
I actually have two that are of the same name, but one is need oil based and the other is sulfur based.

I have found that my parvi hybrids react badly while maudiae types do not seem to mind at all.

The thing is my seedlings are parvi hybrids, so I'm worried that spraying will just completely kill them off, given the size of the seedlings.

I guess I'll just have to toss the diseased ones and try to keep the survivors as happy as possible.

I mean I still have enough plants. I tossed about 4 initially for root damage ( I accidently pull them off trying to separate the plants), then I tossed one last month becuase it was nearly rotted out at the base, and now I see about 5-7 smallest ones are showing brown rot, which I think I will just throw away.
I still have about 30 large healthy seedilngs from the same batch.

So, I guess it is not worth the risk using something that is not good for my health and something that might just aid in killing the little delicate plants.

Oh, well...
I was just looking for something in case I buy flask in the future and want to prevent loss, but some loss is perhaps just a reality I have to accept.

Thank you for all the input, everyone!

I think it was you who posted the survival rate of paphiopedilum seedlings a short while ago?
I remember the rate was pretty high in general with a excpetion of certain very sensitive species which nearly all died out.
You said you did not spray your seedlings.
