Default what's the difference between a multi floral paph and a single floral paph??

A few months ago I got my first two paphs. One is a noid and the other has a name. The one that has a name is Paph. delenatii 'pink magic' x S. Gratrix 'golden slippers'

I was looking care for paphs and saw that there r single and multi flowering paphs.

What is the difference??

Thank you.

One sends up a single flower after maturing a new growth.
The other sends up a spike of multiple flowers I believe.
I think they open sequentially too

You can't tell by just looking at a non blooming Paph. You have to know the parentage, or wait for it to bloom go know for sure. Your named hybrid is a single floral because both parents are single floral.

Multiflorals have species in their background that send up tall spikes with multiple flowers on each spike. Typically the flowers open one at a time until the whole spike is in full bloom. Multiflorals should not be confused with sequential bloomers. A sequential bloomer will also carry multiple flowers per spike, however, the difference is that only one flower is open at a time. As a new bud matures the previous flower will drop.

Concerning your "contravercy" about media for paphs, there is none. What you choose to use should be based upon your growing conditions and watering habits as much as the type of plant.

I have paphs in straight Orchiata #5, our "Better Off Moist" mix, in semi-hydroponics using LECA as a medium, and in a new experiment, in a combination of EcoWeb and AquaMat strips. (That one plant has decided to put out three new growths all at once.)

The multifloral designation usually refers to species and hybrids in a couple of paph sections (groups) that more or less all produce a minimum of 2 or 3 flowers per spike, and usually all of the flowers are open at the same time or within a few days of each other. The term multifloral is generally accepted as referring to a plant that is a species or hybrid from one of those groups.

Sequential multiflorals are species and hybrids from a group of paphs that produce many flowers per spike (multifloral), but typically only have one or two open at a time.

The single floral, also called unifloral, designation is a little more of a nebulous generalization, but generally refers to the species and hybrids that typically only produce a single flower per spike. Also, it basically refers to species and hybrids that are not in one of the multifloral groups. For a good number of species and hybrids in this group, it's not uncommon for well-grown plants and specific clones to be bi- or trifloral. So, calling them unifloral or singlefloral is a bit of a misnomer.

Paph. delenatii is a species where bifloral clones are fairly common. This trait also carries over into a lot its hybrids. Really the same goes for a number of the brachy species and their hybrids, which is what S. Gatrix is classfied as. So, what I'm saying is, even though your plant would typically be called a unifloral paph, it would not surprise me if it was bifloral.

Also, the unifloral, multifloral, and sequential designations get a lot tricker when you're talking about hybrids, because a hybrid can have species in its background from all three groups. At that point, you just call them novelties or mutts and when they bloom, you get what you get.

I currently have a Paph 'Pink Fred' that just opened its second bloom. The second opened at least a week if not more after the first. There is a smaller 3 and much much smaller 4th bud as well.

I just got this in March after the Orchid Show at Chicago Botanic Gardens. It's still in the original medium which appears to be a bark/charcoal mix with some sponge rock.

My other single floral Paph Hsinying Majakun '#7' x Paph. Hilo Green 'Perfection' which is not in flower but is growing a new growth, I repotted in bark with some sphagnum moss and some charcoal/lava rock mixture.

The bark I got from a local nursery is a bit on the chunkier side btw. But like I said it's all mixed up. The moss I mixed in I made sure I put some nearer to the roots as I heard they like to be a bit more moist than my Phals. So far so good I think.

Good luck with yours!
