Default Bud Watch - purpuratum!

Seems like my prupuratum is going to bloom this year as well. I'm very pleased with it; it's a good Paph that doesn't make too much trouble for its owner.

Here's how far the bud has come today:

Well, not many days have passed, but I thought I should start updating this bud-watch thread every Saturday instead, so here's how far it has come now:

I love bud watch on paphs. I love well behaving paphs too.

At the moment, I'm enjoying the bud watch of the second spik on my Armeni White. One spike is already in bloom with two flowers on it. Yay!!!
Only if flowers on this plant lasted long like my other paphs....by the time the second spike opens up its flowers, the current bloom would be gone.
well, I at least have a continuous bloom to enjoy.

I keep looking multiple times a day at the center of a few paphs that have not flowered a while. well, so far, just new leaves or nothing emerging. cmon, guys!!!

I recognize that... I'm glaring at most of my Paphs (they're almost all little runts with lots and lots of growing to do before they even reach BS) but it doesn't help at all... I seem to have at least two well behaved Paphs; the purpuratum and the cerveranum, both are blooming when they should. The rest of the crowd are either dying or getting new leaves/fans, seems to be no middle road there.

But I love them anyway, 'cause they are beautiful (not the dying ones, but the healthy ones).

Dying ones, what are they dying of? rot?

I read paph seedlings get black rot and go mass death!

Most of my paphs are in growth mode at the time with a few in bloom.
Complex are not flowering...again! one more year and that's it! hahaha

I expect buds on four of my paphs. please, guys!!!

I hope your bud is having a speedy growth.

I do the same thing. I'm hoping my prized sanderianum will spike soon. The newest growth seems big enough to bloom and it got a new leaf. Leo Schordje says that sanderianum blooms in June/July or November/December.

Weeell, mostly they are dying because of a stupid owner actually. I have a few Paphs that have not been doing well with me, and I've made everything worse by disturbing them too much. I've, so far, almost killed my barbatum var. nigritum and my philippinense var. roebelenii. The barbatum var. nigritum was a really small plant to begin with and one of my first Pahs. At first I almost watered it to death, and when it had started to recover, I repotted it, resulting in it loosing all of its roots. It has a new growth emerging now, after a whole winter of living in the terrarium (my sickbay for rootless orchids), but I still don't know if it'll make it.

The philippinense var. roebelenii was my first multiflora Paph, and when I got it home and repotted it, half of its root system fell off due to rot (not my fault in the beginning at least). It had three fans, but one fell off together with the rotted roots and the second one died this winter because of crown rot. When it got crown rot, I repotted it to make sure the rot hadn't spread to the rest of the plant, which it hadn't, but it got stressed because of me messing with its roots too much and started to die back. Now, I've repotted it again, because I realized that the substrate was too fine (it wants a bit coarser substrate to be happy), and tossed it inside the terrarium. I don't know if it's going to make it or not, so I've gotten a small replacement philippinense var. roebelenii.

I also have a third Paph not doing well. It's the smallest and most expensive of my roth babies, x sib 'Jim Crull' FCC/AOS x 'Canadian Club' GM/JOGA, that got a nasty leaf burn that is now slowly eating away at one of its two remaining leaves. I think it won't make it, but I haven't given up yet. The reason it got burned, is because I had the T5 too close to the plants...

So the reason why I have three very unhealthy Paphs, is all owner related, but hopefully I've learned something.
