Paphiopedilum Insigne fma. Sanderae

still going strong for full three month!

I got this plant in bloom back in January. It had one old flower and two about to open buds.
It had been quite bright refreshing green but turned golden yellow (the pictures don't really represent the correct color, which is amazingly beautiful!) about three weeks ago. nearing the end I guess.
It's got three new growths going also.


By the way, I read that insigne needs cooling during the winter.
Anyone who grows insigne, please share any tips on that aspect. Thanks in advance!

In the background of the first pic is a flower of Spicerianum&Stone Lovely cross. It is about to drop off after being in bloom forever!

Interesting about the winter cooling. I don't know the answer but I have a hybrid of these which is not doing as well as it used to and I just wonder if I should have been cooling it.

What do you mean by "not doing as well"? overall growth or blooming ability?

I thought orchids that require "cooling" to induce spiking can still grow perfectly fine. They just never flower, if ever, then poorly so.

What is your hybrid? I know that Insigne was widly used for many of the complex paphs.

I should probably try Exul, which has similar flowers but grow warm all year long. but then most of Exul I see have larger dots which I tend to dislike.
I just like the color (both when green and yellow with just hint of some tiny spots on the dorsal) of this one a lot.

I have one large green complex paph (stone lovely pacific shamrock sort) with multiple growths which is not flowering this spring. Some of the old unbloomed growths are almost two years old. I was advised to stick it in the fridge for some weeks, which I did, yet nothing happened. It is now working on two new growths. hmmm
I'm losing my patience with this plant now.

Now I have another large green complex, which al
so has pacific shamrock and stone lovely, but also henryanum. This one blooms freely and I wonder if it's because of the henryanum gene in it.

Are the colors accurate ? My sanderae doesn't look like yours at all.

Yours is nothing like mine??? I've seen some variations but mine looks pretty standard.

I'm not at home and can't remember the hybrid just now. It was growing very vigorously and flowered for me about 18 months ago. Now it's seems to be slowly shrinking (not growing as fast as old flowered fans die back) and it seems to have not had much growth since it's last blooming. Don't really know the cause

How do you grow it?
This is my first Insigne, so I have no clue what the outcome will be for me either.

Just on my windowledge with some phals and other paphs. I try and keep it slightly more moist than the phals, but otherwise it just sits there getting the same general care as everything else. Sorry forgot to look what the hybrid was as I got home late last night.

According to this, Paph. insigne has an average temperature range of 51°F (11°C) to 71°F (22°C). I have a Paph. gratrixianum which according to this, has an average temperature range of 48°F (9°C) to 71°F (22°C). It isn't quite blooming sized yet, but I haven't been cooling it and it has grown quite a bit. It is about a year or two from blooming size.
