Default My first paphs

I walked into the big box store two days ago and bought these beauties. I did not expect to see anything like them. I could not pass them up. These have the best roots I have seen from this store. All are brown, but firm. I don't see any new root growth. Is it safe to repot now, or should I let them acclimate a few weeks?

Hi Jerry,

Wow, I wouldn't have been able to resit them either.

Paph roots are usually brown and hairy (it suprised me first time I saw them).

If they were mine I would be in two minds as to whether to repot. So far I've only repotted each of my Paphs after the flower has faded, but at the same time I think it is best to repot straight away even if you loose the flower as a result. (Keeping the plant and roots healthy is more important than the flowers). But I've tended to risk leaving them and repotted later.

That was a nice find Jerry. I really like the first one. You can repot a Paph pretty much any time, whether in bloom or not. I probably would wait until the blooms are spent 'cause I'm such a klutz and would more than likely break the stalk anyway. Just make sure no critters came back from the store.

I agree with the other two conclusions above - repotting is pretty much tolerated even when in bloom. I've waited and not waited. Neither seems to be a bad approach for me. I usually go with clear pots and wait till the mix is pretty well broken down before repotting since these plants typically (naturally) grow in leaf litter, and such.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

Rosie-
Thanks for the insight. I am not sure when I will transplant, but now it is obvious to transplant before I see "green" roots. I might have been waiting a long time!!!
