Paph lowii - Orchid Board

This is an easy to grow and bloom species. I ended up trading this plant for an awarded Paph stonei...a good trade in my books. It'll be a few years before i see the stonei bloom but I LOVE stonei and the fact that it is a division of an awarded plant is a bonus.

That was certainly not a P. lowii as far as I can recollect. The type lowii has dorsal dipping forward with darker coloration and pin stripes and wider and never deflecting from the median. The petals are hairy with dark wartty spots and plainly outstreched unlike the downward twisted bent seen in the photograph. Moreover, the spike remains straight without the ziggzag seen in the snap.

Um....that's a lowii. Maybe you should Google for lowii so you can compare. I even had this one judged and while it wasn't an award quality lowii it wasn't questioned as far as identity.

It certainly looks like lowii......Just keep in mind that paph lowii has quite a large range, hence there is a lot of variation in the different populations. The one in the picture is most likely a sib cross of two high quality plants.

Have a look at the bottom picture, it has the twisted petals like Wendy's.

When someone like Marty says that it looks like lowii I must pat my back for attracting subscribers to a confusing subject. Specei defenition is normally based on the first discovered plant material what is also known as type material from type locality. As in cactus family, in orchids too, I believe, the type material defenition takes precedence over the rest of a certain speceis found elsewhere. I would say rest of them are just varietal form and do not have the esoteric(snob) value that type material has. I also opine, huge variation in forms ensures divergense of a specei into many species.
