Default Paphiopedilum Hsinying Majakun

I'm impressed by the flower to foliage size ratio of my new Paphiopedilum Hsinying Majakun. And there is a second bud that should open in a few weeks!

I'm not sure if I should read the label

((Makuli x curtisii) x Maudiae) x (Maudiae 'Napa Valley' x sib)

or

(((Makuli x curtisii) x Maudiae) x Maudiae 'Napa Valley') x sib

Do you have an opinion?

The dashes are confusing. Normally a lower case ' x ' is used to indicate a cross. Parentheses are supposed to help clarify things.

The pod parent is normally listed first, before the ' x ', and the pollen parent afterwards.

I would guess the pollen parent, listed after the ' x ', was the progeny of Paph. Maudiae 'Napa Valley' crossed with another, unnamed Paph. Maudiae. When you cross a hybrid with another clone (different individual) of the same cross, it retains the same name.

If the dashes are supposed to represent ' x ' or crosses, I would guess the pod parent was the progeny of a pod parent being the cross of (pod parent Paph. Makuli crossed with pollen parent Paph. Curtisii), crossed with pollen parent Paph. Maudiae.

I looked up the ancestry on orchidroots.com. Paph. Maudiae is a cross between the species Paph. callosum × Paph. lawrenceanum. Paph. Curtisii is an old name for what should properly be called Paph. Lachmee, and is Paph. ciliolare × Paph. superbiens. It gets more confusing because the species Paph. superbiens was at one time called Paph. curtisii (note the lower-case first letter, denoting a species rather than a hybrid), and Paph. superbiens, formerly called Paph. curtisii, was one of the parents of the hybrid formerly called Paph. Curtisii, correctly called Paph. Lachmee.

Many people leave labels alone and don't change them, especially for well-known plants. Don't worry about it too much.

Your plant will be 75% Paph. Maudiae, since one parent (50%) is that cross, and the other parent is half that cross, providing another 25% of Maudiae ancestry.

Consider asking the vendor for a explanation.
