Default Where to get Phrag kovachii?

So I have started my Phrag collection and they do really well for me. I have a good set up for them. I also live at 6,000 Feet elevation and from what I read the Phrag kovachii is a mountain orchid.

Anyways I have some Phrag kovachii hybrid seedlings I am growing but I want the queen Phrag the real Phrag kovachii . They look amazing I have found a few seedlings on ebay. Some are very expensive.

Where can I find one? Do you think in a 5 years they will become more common in the hobby?

Phrag kovachii is expensive...and I have serious doubts that prices will come down much over the next 5 years. They are less than they were several years ago but I think we've hit a price point that will remain the same into the foreseeable future.

Phrag kovachii is relatively newly discovered species (early 2000's sometime) and it is considered endangered in it's native habitat. It is highly controlled and only a very few nurseries (world wide!) are able to even propagate/offer them for sale. It is also a notoriously difficult plant to grow. All those factors dictate that the plant will likely remain pretty pricey for some time yet.

If I were in the market for one, I would talk to Piping Rock Orchids (first to offer it in the US) and/or Orchids Limited
Expect to pay at least a couple hundred for a seedling. Maybe more.

If I were in the market for P. kovachii, Ebay is one of the places I'd look. All of the usual caveats apply, though. Because this is an expensive & desirable species and one that's ripe for accidental & intentional mislabeling, I'd be extremely picky about which seller I bought it from.

Some other options I'm aware of are Piping Rock, Orchid Web, and (my local establishment) The Orchid Trail. Many other vendors have this species, but you may have to call or email for prices and availability.

Depending on the breeding line and provenance, expect to pay a minimum of $100 - $200 for a seedling and a minimum of $200 - $300+ for a mature plant at this time (late 2017). You can definitely find them for less, but it's not the norm, and this is a case where a lower price would automatically make me suspicious.

The prices on P. kovachii will come down somewhat over time, but it's been a slow process, and I believe this is a species whose price will continue to drop slowly in the short to medium term.

Some reasons that the prices are elevated and could remain that way are: Kovachii takes a long time to mature from flask; some older clones were said to take 5 - 10 years. Being a slipper, there are no known, reliable means for cloning it in massive quantities. Breeding often produces low or inconsistent yields of seedlings. There have also been decent conservation efforts and limits on export from P. kovachii's native growing regions. This has made P. kovachii more limited in cultivation, and it means there's a lot more world wide competition for specimens, driving up prices. This species also requires specialized care (high water quality, frequent watering, etc) and many places simply don't have the resources to care for large quantities of P. kovachii seedlings.

There are some factors that are working in your favor, though, in terms of bringing down prices. For one, there are more and more vendors importing flasks, and breeding their own seedlings (in the USA), and more supply will lower prices. As newer breeding lines are established with higher quality flowers, the older stock from earlier breeding lines will also drop in value as people hope to scoop up seedlings from cutting-edge breeding with the promise of bigger flowers, better shape, and award potential. I've also heard that some of the newer clones mature more quickly from seed (2 - 4 years), which would also help lower the prices since vendors wouldn't need to devote as much growing space for as long to produce flowering sized plants.

I agree with what has been stated. Orchids Limited in Minnesota right now has two different kovachii crosses for sale as 8-10 cm seedlings for $250. The first kovachii seedlings available several years ago were upwards of $500, so the price is coming down. The parents of these two crosses were very high quality named plants, award quality.

Chuck Acker might know (flasks by acker on-line). He prominently shows Phrag Kovachii 'Maximus' x 'Goliath' on his home page. He might know where you could get a division. Just e-mail him using the e-mail he gives on his site. He is very friendly.

Last time I've heard it was Piping Rock Orchids (enquire for prices) and I also saw some from Ecuagenera at 275USD- I've got two kovachii hybrids from them so far, and they were reasonable size, so I would expect same for the species itself. Good luck shopping!

If you are ok with small ones (and you can handle fresh import), you can have them at a reasonable price now.
Peruflora has 4" leaf span for $80. They used to have small flask, but they seem to be out now.
Orquideas Amazonica has small one for $60 (or $50 if you buy 3). Or Med. size for $120. Preorder deadline is today for Tamiami, and Dec. 15 for POE.
