Default Phragmipedium Geralda

In January I had the opportunity to place an order with The Orchid Zone. One of the Phragmipediums available was Geralda (= caudatum x findlayanum).

These came in as large multigrowth BS plants, and several have budded up this summer. The first one to bloom is an attractive flower with the expected long petals.

I find Phrags quite easy. Intermediate temperatures and light similar to Cattleyas for mature plants (seedlings need more shade). Concerning water, there are two groups:

3 species (caudatum, longifolium & sargentianum) and their hybrids, need LOTS of water. Don't let them dry out.

All other species and their hybrids: They have to stand in a tray with 1.1/2" to 2" of water. I started with 1/2", went to 1" and now I use 1.1/2" to 2", and they are doing better than ever.

Thank you for all the culture information. I live in So.Calif.and would love to try one. Can you recommend a particular plant that might be easier for my conditions?

My 'Eric Young' (besseae x longifolium) has withstood temps in the 100's when given light shade and some Sun in the evenings. Since it must be the longifolium parent that imparts heat tolerance (besseae is from a higher altitude), any phragmipedium longifolium hybrid may grow under your conditions. So for long petals, you might try a Phrag. grande.
