some question about upcoming slippers Male
Default some question about upcoming slippers

Hi all. I have asked some vendors to put some slippers on hold for but I have a few question about them. Here they are;

-Paphiopedilum sanderianum - how long are their petals able to get.
-Paphiopedilum rotshchildianum
-Paphiopedilum parishii
-Phragmipedium lindenii
-Phragmipedium pearcei
-Phragmipedium besseae
-Phragmipedium Sorcerer's apprentice - I've seen their inflorecens reaching lengs of 2 meters can they really get that long.

There is no firm answer to that. It depends upon both genetics and culture. I have seen PEoY with 12" petals, and others that just keep growing until they reach the "ground" (table top).

On the topic of Sorcerer's Apprentice and size, the answer is yes, it's possible for the spikes to attain approximately 2 meter height, possible more.

Both parent species (sargentianum and longifolium) are variable in size, though, up to and including compact varieties that are a fraction of the "normal" size. So, depending on the breeding line, you could end up with a small to modest sized plant having a shorter flower spike. However, the big, classic S.A. is a monster.

Also, in phrags, first time bloomers are usually not at full size. As the plants mature, and put on multiple growths, subsequent fans, spikes, and flowers are often larger. So, depending on how old your plant is, it may take several years or more before you'd see a massive spike. And because they are sequential bloomers, it might take months before an individual spike reaches full height.

I have seen them in 24-30" range.
I have heard of 36" plus.

Thanks everyone, I have asked the vendor to put the Paph. rothschildianum, sanderianum, parishii on hold. And I just found out today that they are the only vendor in SA that grow Cypripediums, unfortunately nun available at the time.
