Default Potting question regarding Paphs

In general, do Paphs like to be root bound? Or should I provide a bit of growing space? I've seen them both ways and both ways seem to lead to blossoms. Just wondering.

I don't do most Dendros or large, "floofy orchids". For me it's minis (like Angraecoides), Masdies, Paphs, and others that crept in somewhere along the line. See my orchid list for complete collection (usually not current.)

I find paphs like to be repotted... I don't know if small pots are better than larger pots, they really just want fresh mix.

I tend to use the smallest pot that I can that fits the root mass. I figure I'll be repotting it in a year anyway (or at least I mean to...), so I don't need to give it too much room to grow.

I agree with Rob, pot according to the root volume. The key is not letting the mix break down too much before you repot. A stale mix will kill many paph species.
If there is too much mix, there is a good chance of root rot.
Keeping up with repotting is the most important cultural thing to do, and it's the one thing most people put off.

Paphs definitely like being root-bound...in general, use the smallest pot you can get away with that will enclose all the roots and enough medium to reach up to the base of the leaves. There are times when you need to use larger pots, when the root system is very extensive, or, more often, when the top growth is such that it would lead to a totally unstable plant- I have seen paphs that have plenty of top growth, over a foot in diameter, yet only enough root growth to fit in a deep 2" pot...obviously, some compromise will be needed. As for repotting...while most paphs tolerate, even enjoy repotting, the exception is with the brachy's...niveum, bellatulum, etc....these can be very delicate to grow, yet resent repotting. When possible, it is best to repot brachy's with as much "aerating" media as possible...sponge rock, lava rock, diatomite, whatever...just use lots of it so that repotting can be delayed as much as possible. Take care, Eric

Such great postings already, I don't have much to add.
I agree even if they aren't pot bound the can still bloom well. I don't like pot bound, too much watering to keep up with. I allow about 35% spacing inside the pots, So they're still tight without being root bound and do have some room to grow.
