Default Phrag fischeri crown rot.

I'm totally reelin' from this.

I'm completely confused.

The younger leaves from the youngest growth just rotted off.

I just repotted the plant to look at the roots, and quite honestly I don't know what to make of them, but I believe they're not dead as there were some that were light brown.

I allow them to dry out a bit before watering.

I grow them in my bathroom. There's a window, so some light gets in there.

I don't close the bathroom door, but during the cold, I left the window closed. During the warm weather I leave the window open.

It was growing during the 6 or 8 months I had it.

The temperature ranges from 60 F to 80 F.

Humidity ranges around 70% to 80% on average.

It's grown in pumice.

Any thoughts as to what may have caused this is appreciated. If there are any preventative measures that can be taken, I'd appreciate the information that people are able to share.

I have watered it with KLN just now.

Also, is this pretty much tap city, the big sleep, the big cloud in the sky for this plant?

Here are some pics:

In case it's not clear.

In the third pic, the young shoot that had it's leaves rotted off is on the far right of the photo, underneath the larger growth.

In the fourth pic, the young shoot with the leaves rotted off is underneath the larger growth, it' only got one leaf left.

Often the cause of rot like this is water getting trapped in between the leaves (at the base), and then sitting there for a long period of time. You can prevent it by watering only in the morning, trying not to wet the foliage when you water, and increasing air movement around the plant.

It looks like you still have live roots. However, the rot will spread and kill off the entire plant if you don't get rid of it. If you haven't done so already, pull off all of the leaves that have rot and ensure ALL of the rotten tissue is removed. Just grasp the leaves at the base, and tug them down sharply downward. Also remove any rotten roots, and any part of the rhizome that has rotted. If you have to, take a sharp knife or scalpel (sterilize it with a flame first) and cut the infected tissue off. Once the rotten stuff is gone, pour some hydrogen peroxide on the wounds, then powder them with cinnamon, and allow the plant to dry off before you pot it up again.

Okay, assuming that's done...

I've actually removed all the leaves.

But I haven't done the peroxide thing yet.

Will this come back or is it as good as dead?

*gasp*

there is potential that it will comeback. But the root system is small, and plant has been disturbed so I cannot be certain that it will come back.

phrags aren't usually as suspectable to rot due to water in leaves when compared to paphs. However whenever I do get water inside a growth, I turn the plant over to pour the water out...

As long as all of the rotten tissue has been removed, there is a chance the plant will come back. Just coddle it!

Unfortunately while pouring the water out will get rid of most of the water, it still leaves enough in there to cause rot, especially if it gets cool at night and the humidity is high.

I disagree that this problem is more of a Paph thing. I very rarely get crown rot in my Paphs, but this has happened to my Phrags several times. They like wet feet, not wet hands!

Other reason could be due to cold, humid and stale air combined. This is prone to cause infection in plants.

If your humidity is 80%, there should be better air movement. Or you can have lower humidity and less air movement to compensate.
Water droplets dry much slower in 80% humidity and high water conditions promote fungal and bacterial growth

I am your opposite. But I agree with you about the water.

Besseae does rot new growths easily though, keep water out of them!...but they bounce back. I have never grown fischerii so I don't know. But I'd be more careful with these species.

Water before 3pm and have your fans on and that should help prevent rots...

A few of my plants in the same location as the Phrag has done that.

So I think it's better to allow more air in when it's not quite so cold.

If your humidity is permanently 80% I suggest air movement hot or cold. The natural habitats are definitely not so stagnant.
Perhaps installing a small computer fan for your colder days.
