Question size of Phrag. Elizabeth Castle

Hi guys, I need a fast answer to this one. The Foothills Orchid Soc. is having its annual fund raising auction tonight & I am tempted to put up my Phrag Elizabeth Castle to free up some space. I will hang on to it if its a compact Phrag.

I think the crosses are Phrag. Memoria Dick Clements X Hanna Papow.

thanks guys

Hanna is compact. Though I have a Memoria Dick Clement, I do not know how large it gets. Mine is not overly large so far and I've had it a year. someone with Orchid Wiz is bound to answer soon! Carol

Hi Carol, are you meaning that you have a Phrag. Elizabeth Castle? If so has it bloomed for you? What colour are the blooms, I've seen pictures of everything from a rose red to a besseae real red so I am not too sure. I am getting 3 more Phrags this year so I need to be as dispassionite as possible (that is if you can be with an orchid!).

I looked on orchidwiz, but didn't find any size info (I've only had orchidwiz since xmas). There is size info for species, but I haven't found it for the hybrids. The best I could find (in the list of awarded plants) is that the spike is 12 to 14 inches tall on average. I don't know if that gives an indication of the size if the plant.

Ok, I tried another method, by looking up the species that are its grandparents!

Memoria Dick Clement = sargentianum x bessae
Hanne Popow= bessae x schlimii

sargentianum is listed as 36 inches, with leaves 18-24 inches long
bessae : 8-9 inches, with leaves 6-10 inches
schlimii : 12-20 inches, with leaves 9-13 inches

As for color, the ones in the wiz images range from a pinkish red, pink, dark pink to bessae red.

Hopefully that helps a bit!

I do not have an Elizabeth Castle. My avatar is a picture of the Dick Clement. It has besseae somewhere in it. Popow is white. I imagine EC is going to be beautiful in color. I understand your reservations about size. I really would love to have a St. Peter, but the thing gets humungous.

The mature size would be similar to Phrag Jason Fischer. It is pretty compact for a phrag depending on what you consider compact.

Thanks for the feedback guys, one of the 3 phrags I mentioned I was getting this year is a Phrag. Jason Fischer (3N) (Mem. Dick Clements 'Rocket Flash' 4N x besseae 'Cow Hollow II FCC/AOS') from Orchid unlimited. They do a show in Manitoba Canada each year (or did this and last year) so although their chids are pricey (with a capital P!!), we can catch a break on the cost of import.

I think I'll keep the Elizabeth Castle for now..

The plant isn't going to be huge compared to many other phrags. I think it will be managable.
