Default Phrag. dalessandroi

Posting a picture of my wierd Phrag. dalessandroi. This one has some yellow and orange coloration to it, borne upon a VERY tall, branching spike.

Phrag. dalessandroi has been considered a variety of Phrag. besseae, but there are a few differences that would make the segregation more than valid.

The distribution of Phrag. dalessandroi is basically in the "middle" of the Phrag. besseae populations. This would suggest that Phrag. dalessandroi is not the same as Phrag. besseae. Also, Phrag. dalessandroi has one more pair of chromosomes than Phrag. besseae, which is enough to segregate Phrag. besseae var. dalessandroi from Phrag. besseae, into a seperate species.

This species was originally found by Dennis D'alessandro in Zamora, Ecuador. Later, the local botanical garden clean sweeped the original locality of the species. Many sites were later discovered, making the distribution a larger area.

Okie, so here's the pic. I have another I will post later after I get them off the camera...

I don't remember where this one came from, but is just an odd color form of Phrag. dalessandroi. Today I met with Cal Dodson, and he verified that this is a true Phrag. dalessandroi, and not a hybrid nor a Phrag. besseae...
