Cym. Insigne? Help with ID
Default Cym. Insigne? Help with ID

Found this at a local grocery store on the clearance rack. I have kept cymbidiums before, but never seen one quite this large. The pseudobulbs are probably 3" x 5", and the plant is about 4' tall. I don't see a tag, but am hoping there may be one in the pot. I'll find out when I unpot it after the blooms drop. After extensive searching online, I think this may be Cym. insigne, or maybe a cross?

Although very similar to the species insigne, I am not comfortable with saying it is for certain. I would suspect this is a hybrid based on stem carriage and width of foliage. Coupling these factors with the width of the segments and lip markings, add up to enough for me to say a hybrid, probably a first generation.

Thank you! I know it is nearly impossible to get an exact ID. Hoping to find a tag when I repot after the blooms die. I got another one from the same clearance rack that has a tag saying it's a "nandi green giant"

Well, no tag in the pot. Hoping someone will recognize this tag that was in the other plant I bought. Anyone know the grower?

For anyone interested, I managed to figure out that this came from Chisan Orchids, and contacted them. Someone there responded to me and said that this variety is one they just call "Snow Bell" and they aren't sure if that is the official ID.

Nandi is a cross of (Shiraz x Miretta) made by Mary B. Ireland and registered by Dos Pueblos Orchids in 1958. Most cultivars are large greens but whites have been known to appear. Definitely an "antique".

Often wholesale nurseries put trade names on their plants to hide the actual cross and parents or just because it is easier and most customers do not care.
