Can it grow to fast???

everyone,

A newbie here with a totally dumb question I think, LOL...Can an orchid grow to quickly? The Cym I bought last week is going absolutely nuts. Here are some not so great pics...

The new growth on the right was practically non existent last week


This is looking down into the center of the plant so you guys can kind of see what is going on


Here is where it lives for the time being at least, sorry for the poor pic, the light in there is rather bright, I didn't use a flash


Here are the flowers which are beginning to open


This plant has 2 large psuedobulbs(?), the new growth which can be seen in the first pic on the right and 2 more new growths which are just beginning as well as the spike (I'm not even counting whatever is in the very middle as I can't exactly tell what's in there, LOL)...I am watering approx every other day and just lightly fertilized it for the first time today with a water soluble fert. The temps stay approx. 80 degrees in there all the time so it is drying out quickly.

I know I can't transplant until after it is finished blooming
but I am wondering if it is growing to fast for it's own good?

Also when I do transplant should I divide it or just put it in a larger pot? I like the fullness of it but would like to do what is best for the plant It is in a 6" plastic pot for now, if I leave it together can you possibly tell me what size pot I should go to considering all the new growth?

And one last question please...I really like the glazed ceramic pots, but I am assuming they can't breath with the glaze. Are glazed pots okay or are they a bad thing?

The plant looks healthy enough, and you're getting some neat flowers, so I don't think its fast growth is too much of a problem, other than the fact that you'll be needing to repot it more frequently.

I am not of much help with your Cymb. (I only know they like it tight in the pot )

I see you also have a Plumeria in a pot... Does it bloom under those conditons? I only know Plumerias growing outside as very big trees... had never seen them in pots

I doubt it can grow too fast as long as all the cultural needs are being met. Plants sometimes stretch out in shade but I doubt that is what we are seeing here. I have personally seen several of mine go "ape" after getting a steady diet of weak fertilizer water on a regular basis along with plenty of light. I suspect what you are seeing is really to be considered "normal" growth whereas before you saw limited growth. Just a thought.

Kavanaru - Oh yes, they love pots!!! I'm going to sneak a couple of pics in for you and hope no one will get upset with me. These were all grown here at my home and all in pots. I am always happy to share pics of my plumies so feel free to PM me if you would like...at least with those I know what I'm doing unlike the orchids, LOL...

Kavanaru - They have high warmth and light needs kind of like your beautiful orchids but they like it on the dry side in the winter. I am only able to grow them indoors in my light carts or GH in the winter as my house does not have enough light due to covered patios on both east and west sides If they go completely dormant they pretty much look like asparagus

I better get back to orchids before someone nails me to a wall around here Should I leave that cym in a 6" pot or do you think I should I pot up after it is finished blooming? Thanks for all the help

back to the chids... I would leave your Cymb in that pot... a least until it has finished blooming let's see what the ones growing Cymbs have to say here...

Thanks so much...I went looking for new pots yesterday and couldn't make up my mind which I wanted, so I actually walked out with nothing, LOL...I think that was a first

The flowers on my plant are not very colorful but I still like the growth. It's fun to watch them slowly open though, it's taken them about a week to get this far!

Well you could always get a nice pot and put the cym and the existing pot in it for the time being.
My cym also seemed to be growing too fast for its own good, but maybe it is normal. In my case it's 8 growths that sort of appeared overnight. It seems to be adding nearly a third of its size every year. I know that they like to be pot bound so if you do repot, maybe the current size pot would be enough until next year. When I bought mine, it had literally exploded the plastic pot it was in. Those are strong roots! As for dividing it, I think the minimum is of 3 bulbs per division, so yours is still too small. Besides, they put on a nicer show if you have a bigger plant!

And nice plumies by the way! I love them, but just don't have the space for any more plants indoors during the winter.
