Default Mini cymbids

Minis huh? If you're looking to keep plants less than 15" or so you might try anything with Cym. goeringii as a parent--or try the species itself. I'd also recommend any of the Golden Elf clones, the Enzan clones or Cym. erythrostylum

I would not consider any of these true miniature Cymbidiums which would fit your criteria. In fact Spectrum, Burgundian and Kiri Te Kanawa are large standards. The others are termed miniature but with good culture, will be far greater than the 12" leaf max you may want.

I would recommend hybrids from the Cym species sinense or ensifolium. SD recommends goeringii hybrids also, but in my experience that species and its hybrids require a cooler winter environment.

I have a cymbidium kusuda shining x douglas dillon from Marlow's Orchids. It has the ensifolium background which Cym Ladye recommended.

The leaves are between 12-16" in length, and the entire plant is under 10" tall.

Here's the most recent picture of my plant. It's in a pretty large tall pot because its root system is so big, but the leaves themselves are quite compact.

If that's the sort of cymbidium you are looking for, Marlow has several similar crosses available on his website.

I have a few cymbidiums under 6 inch tall. Most are dwarf varieties of Chinese cymbidiums, goeringii, ensifolium and sinense. The shortest one, Cym. goeringii, "cuigaihe" is merely 4 inch tall. But they are not easy growers though so it takes extra care to grow and flower them well.

To me, the true miniature Cymbidiums are the East Asian Cymbidiums. the smallest Asian Cymbidium is called Cymbidium goeringii var goeringii (there are different variations of Cymbidium goeringii such var. formosanum, var. longibracteanum, var. gracillimum and they are bigger). Cymbidium goeringii var goeringii, the leaves are pretty much no longer than 30 cm. The smallest one I have seen in Japan is no less than 5cm tall. They come in the colours of rainbow (red, orange, yellow, green, purple, white and multicolour)......

Yes, goeringii v goeringii is truly a mini but I definitely would never recommend it for the first plant for a novice grower.
