Default Thinking I need to get a Cymbidium!

I've never had or grown a Cymbidium before, but I'm thinking it's time!

Where would you recommend I get one? Do you have a nursery of preference?

What kind of growing conditions would you recommend?
Any favorites I should keep my eyes open for?

I appreciate your advice soooooo much!

Carolyn,
I think you might find something here. They certainly seem to have Cym's of every type.
I love Cym's and am in the 'experimental' phase with 3 right now. I hope to get more this summer (to cold to ship right now). Let us know what you decide! I might follow your lead! LOL

HAHA! I was just going to suggest the Santa Barbara Orchid Estate! Beat me to it AL!

In all truth they have and grow the best Cym's I have ever seen anywhere. And they have pages and pages filled. I was just looking at them yesterday!
I been on a Cym kick as of late cause I discovered they grow really great for me in my yard in the ground.

How awesome is that? That means no repotting, and little worry. I have to keep pinching myself to believe they are really even orchids! lol

Al, Where would that be that you frequent? You are in Maine, right?
Aren't Cyms all very large?
Are they fragrant?
That is one orchid I have shyed away from due to thinking they were huge.
Oh, and DJ, how do you plant an orchid in the ground????? I thought soil would kill orchids. kiki

Hi Kiki-do
I'm in a small town near Bangor. There are the big Cym's like you are familiar with and the mini. Some of both are fragrant. Cym's can be terresterial if you live in the right zone. Afraid we're not, even in Rumford. They grow the warmer growing type in the southern states in the ground, also CA and HI.
Staying dry down there in the 'big city'?

Al

Hi Al, Thanks for helping to clear up my muddled thoughts about cyms. Mini cyms, huh? I'd love to look at some and see their size.
You didn't say where you frequent. The only place I know of in Maine is Woodsprites in New Gloucester.
My son works in Bangor....if there is another place, I would love to know for my next trip up that way.
Thanks for all your help. I'm staying dry here in the big city of Rumford. The weather is wild, isn't it? kiki

Hi again,
There is a very small greenhouse called GreenCare on the outskirts of Bangor in the town of Hermon. I'm sure your son knows of it. It's on the main drag and you can't miss it. Rt. 201 I repeat though, it is small with a few orchids. But more than HD LOL.
There main business is leasing plants to the Malls and Banks, etc. in and around Bangor.
I've always wanted to go to Woodsprite but can't travel that far because of the crippling form of Osteo-Arthritis, the reason I've contracted orchid fever. I can still water plants!!
AL

Hiya KiKi

I think the soil adversion thing is just a general rule of thumb but not always the case. I was concerned about it for a while too, but someone told me to give it a shot. So, I braved my fear and tried it. Low and behold..i just went out there yesterday to stake some spikes on the Cym's in the yard. The roots are fat and plump too. They all look pretty great.

I've got a few warm growers, more compact then the cooler standards. I find these are fairly easy care and will bloom with or without a drop in tempts.

I keep them in clay pots, peatmoss with additional perlite. Of course you wouldn't water as you would in a bark mixture, nor do you need to remove them from the growing spot to water. I just treat as a house plant.

I think anyone would enjoy growing these, They smell wonderful and I find them to be fussless. (is that a word?)

The biggest problem you'll have, is picking out 1 or 2 or 3 .... 4, 5, or 6 , well you get the picture
