Default Pumilum (Khyberpass x Fascination)

Has anyone ever heard of this cross and if it was named?
Really would like to know about what the flowers probably look like, but will more than likely have to wait for the flowers.

Also, from what I understand these like cooler temps. I live in Sacramento so would I need to bring it inside during the summer? Any info would be much appreciated.

Thanks
Richard

Default Pumilum x

Richard:

I'm guessing that Khyberpass & Fascination are clonal names for two awarded (or not) Cym. pumilum plants...
If that is the case, it would simply be Cym. pumilum 'Khyberpass' x Cym. pumilum 'Fascination'...
There is a rather old cymbidium that bears the name Fascination, it's parentage is very complex; it was registered in 1954--if you want to look into its background, the RHS site can do it for you. Its parents are Joyful x Constance Flory. If your plant is Cym. pumilum 'Khyerpass' x Cym. Fascination, I can not find a registered name for the cross.
There is no cymbidium that bears the name Khyberpass in the current RHS records.
Have you tried to contact the person/nursery that you got the plant from? If it is straight pumilum x pumilum I'd guess that the flowers should look pretty much like pumilum. If it's pumilum x Fascination I would guess that you could expect pendant spikes with high floral count (from the pumilum) with deep pink/fuschia flowers (Fasciantion at work here...)
Good luck with the plant, and keep us posted with what you find out.
Good growing,
Adam
PS: you are correct about pumilum liking it cool; I am not from CA, but what is the average summer day & night temp for you? We get quite hot in the day here in the midwest--often 80-90's for July/August, with nights usually in the 60's...and I don't have problems with most cymbidiums; I do not have any straight pumilum in my collection though. Hopefully someone who grows this species will chime is as well.

The correct Grex is Khyber Pass, of which Khyber Pass 'Potentate' is rather well known.
The cross of this with Fascination is Cymbidium Howard Cobb (Cymbidium Khyber Pass x Cymbidium Fascination) and the only awarded cultivar was 'Plum' AD/CSA in 1979.. Thanks to Alex at Orchidwiz for the info., What a neat piece of software.

I'm not sure why pumilum was injected into this reference. Pumilum is a very funny species in that depending on the cross it can be both cool growing and warm tolerant. I've seen both. Sarah Jean 'Ice Cascades' is supposed to be cool growing but it flowers nicely here in Hawaii on the Big Island at most elevations including mine which is quite warm. Also Pearl Sachiko which has pumilum in the background combined with erythrostylum becomes a warm bloomer.

I agree that I never met an orchid I could't kill.. it's just that I kill cymbidiums less than any other.

Default Thank you

Thank you for all the information. A friend gave me his collection of about 35 orchids. He gave three mini, coulpe stardard and some in between size cymbidiums. This was the only one with a label. He showed me pictures of two that were in the collection which were Cym. Melody Fair 'Marilyn Monroe and Cym. Hunter's Point 'Sunset'. Don't know which one is in which pot though.

Thanks,
Richard

Sorry to hear you have no tags. Also you might want to check for viruses. Suggest the new Agdia kits..
