It is the only forum where I see the type of cymbidiums I need to grow - discussed and I appreciate that very much.

Hello Corina,

Your plant is actually Cymbidium Suzie Q (Sue x Red Beauty). It was originally hybridized by Andy Easton and named by Bob Harris. Interestingly, this plant has had a bit of a convoluted history and has aquired several names over the decades. It goes under the name you have but also Red Ruby 'Pacific', Ruby Red 'Pacific' and the very strange 'Rudolph's Nose'. I quess this last name is somewhat appropriate if it flowers for Christmas in the northern hemisphere. It is generally a strong grower and more tolerant of warmer temperatures than most.
Cheers,
Chuckie

Chuckie,
Is this the same plant you were less than enthusiastic about on the Cym Alliance forum? Are these poor clones of a good cultivar or was the original a bit lacklustre to begin with?

Hello Andrew,
Yes, this is the same plant. I have seen plants that have been better grown. I think there may be a bit of bad meristemming going on here and maybe not the most ideal growing. I have a plant of Suzie Q flowering now in my greenhouse and it is OK. This hybrid was actually made about 20 years ago even though it was only recently named. It makes a perfectly acceptable pot plant. I still have problems with its low flower count and the tendancy for the lateral sepals to have recurved margins. Not sure what the original plant was like. We here in Australia have only seen meristems.
All the best,
Chuckie
