Spike time--a bit early... - Orchid Board

Well, after the very cool summer that we had here in MI, almost all of my mature cymbidiums are in spike. Here are a few pics that I took out in the gh this morning; the majority of these are running about 2 months early for me this year--I guess that makes up for their extreme tardiness last year when it was so warm!

Looking good Adam, They will be nice for the holidays!
I can't get a Cym to spike if I used Holy Water. LOL So I grow them for the foliage.

Good show, Adam. My Masdies enjoyed the cool summer as well. Got Dracs in bud/bloom also.

Nice healthy plants Adam! I Have always wanted these... but, but I haven't got the right growing conditions so I especially look forward to seeing your blooms!

I had my cymbidiums out on the driveway all summer 'cause it's the only place I get full sun all day long and, like you Adam, my cymbidiums are spiking. I'm soooo excited that I'm going to get some flowers.... that is if I don't overwater and kill the darn things!!!!!

I as well have about 1/2 of my cymbids in spike...early. I was just going to cut them all down on water etc...but now that I've discovered spikes, not sure what to do. Do you continue to water and fertilize those in spike now Adam and Biker Doc??

Spikes are sure what we all want to see. Have lots of spikes even down here in Florida and several of the Golden Elf hybrids in bloom or just going out of bloom. It was a cool summer here in Florida too,

I do keep up the watering routine, but I have not been fertilizing as much (April-Ocotber I usually feed with every watering), now only about every 10 days or so, though if I forget, I don't worry about it. There is way less sun now and they are kept quite a bit cooler, so I water about once a week as well, as opposed to every day when they are outside for the spring/summer...

Very nice, Adam. Our summer (here just south of you in Indiana) was unseasonably cool also. My two Cym. eburneums are already spiking, along with a couple of hybrids. I just wish there was a way for me to explain to them that they shouldn't get used to the pampering temperatures they got to experience this year. Next year we'll probably be back to the normal hot and humid swamp-like conditions that make up our usual summers here. How many cymbidiums do you have? All hybrids, or do you have any species?
