Spike time - Orchid Board

It is definately time for spikes! I'll post more as these elongate; please share some pics of your spiking plants as well.

Nice spikes! I recently bought a cym Golden Elf Sundust and I don't have spikes yet, but it's alive! Thanks for sharing your photos.

You've got so many in spike, they are going to look wonderful once they are all in bloom!!

What's the cym in the before last picture? It's so small!
I'll praying for some spikes on my cym. I've had it 3 years and it has not bloomed since. A shame, as the flowers were nice. If it doesn't do anything for me this year, I'll have to find it a new home because it's just a space hogging foliage plant.

That is a pic of Cym. Ladybug; this will be its first bloom for me--I started it from a backbulb of a friend's plant...I am keeping one of these for a friend of mine, and it is a monster (the plant itself is quite small in stature, but it's about 25 growths in a 12" pot...so it's sort of a "XXL" mini

) You're probably either not giving your plant enough light or you are keeping it too warm at night--these seem to be the two most common reasons that cymbids fail to initiate spike in my opinion. If you want something small (relatively) and floriferous, I'd suggest Gold Elf or one of its progeny...they can take warmer temps and grow like weeds, plus they usually stay under 20" or so (not including the spike)

Cyms and So. Fla. don't go well together...big bummer because I love them. I love them so much that I regularly buy them anyway from a vendor on ebay who then sends them out to my cousin (as gifts) from me, in Northern Calif., the next best thing, I guess. Long way around saying, sorry...no pics to post but please be sure to post pics when these bloom!

I only have one, a supermarket noid I bought this spring. It was outside all summer in as much sun as I could give it. Since this the first cymb I have ever tried, I really didn't know what to expect. Well, it has seven new nubbins in various stages of development. I'm sure some are new growths, but I can just hope maybe one of them will be a spike, and bloom.

You lucky Dragon you! Cyms do better in the colder climates than they do here in the south. I have acquired a couple that came from "Publix Grocery Store".
Had them out all summer and still outside....have some new growth but not spikes yet. Still hoping they will produce flowers and they were in bloom when I got them. I see that you start tying they up when really small so the spike growths straight up. Good to see and remember if I have any spikes. Thanks for the pics.

Don: Keep in mind that your plants will need a few weeks (at least) of cool nights to set off the spiking process...if you can leave them out when temps drop into the low 40's (and keep them out with these night temps), you should see spikes (provided that they have been grown with sufficient light). I don't stake all of my cymbids--those which are known for pendant spikes I generally leave to their own devices.
