Kim,

Once a new growth is several inches long, it is possible to differentiate between a spike and pseudobulb by gently squeezing the tip. If it feels slightly soft and hollow it probably is a spike but if it feels hard and solid it is a new pseudobulb. Just remember to squeeze gently.

Another method is to look at the shape of the new growth. Most spikes will have a bullet type shape while new pseudobulbs will appear more pointy and arrow shaped.

Thanks, Jim. From what I can tell right now, I have a few of both, which seems right. I just hope I can keep them growing now that my plant is inside for the winter, and is not getting as much light as it did outside.

noid cym spikes

3 on one plant - not too many buds each tho. this plant has already spiked twice this year!

Jkelee...I was hoping we could all compare our cymbidium spikes in here...though if you want to share others, I am sure that myself and the others would find them interesting

It's been a 10 days, and some plants have really progressed...here are some follow-up pics. I'll post more in 10 days or so.

PS: it's still too early for me to tell on the last one; it looks like it's a spike at this time, but this plant can be deceptive (though it's not usually putting out vegetative growths now...)

Hey all. This is my Cym Mighty Remus in spike. My question is after taking a look at this pic, is this one going to hold off until spring to bloom? I am so new to cyms. Thanks

Linda: I think this one will probably be in bloom in the next 45 days or so; warmer nights (above mid 40's, but below 55F) will hurry things along... though what's the rush? Nice looking spike, great growing!
