three spikes- two blasted so i moved all the cyms to the lath house in case it was too bright in the other spot...this one is looking nice still...

i maintain guarded optimism as i did not even think these divisions would spike under normal circumstances the same year they were snipped

I am impressed! Indeed pretty amazing that it's working on flowers this year! Here's hoping that this one makes it. IT is also possible that it will work on another batch of spikes somewhere around October.

Man, I'm rooting for you. I really hope your spikes make it. That will give me a lot of confidence, since I just bought 5 Cymbidiums in spike. I did that because there was one I wanted, Keep Rolling By 'Orange 9' that I've been looking for. I found a tiny one, but I already have my tiny Everglades Gold, and it's probably still a couple years from blooming, so I wanted a grown plant. I also found one on Etsy, but it was 60 dollars which is ridiculous, and I am hesitant to buy plants from Etsy.

Finally I found that The Orchid People of Hawaii had mature plants, in spike no less. SCORE! I got it! Except... the problem is that The Orchid People will not sell fewer than 5 plants at once. I'm not sure why, an economical thing, probably. You probably have to buy several to make shipping from Hawaii worth it.

I went back and forth and back and forth about whether I wanted to do this. They had more than 5 that i really loved, so picking out 4 more wasn't going to be a problem... but do I need to buy 5 Cymbidiums when I don't even know if I can bloom the I have, and the four I had before got huge after 5 years (giant pots, so heavy I could hardly move them) and I never got a single flower from them, even though I tried everything (they were supposed to be warm blooming hybrids. I got them as seedlings from new crosses).

Then I woke up at 4 in the morning one day and couldn't go back to sleep, so I got on my computer and started messing around, and I decided screw it. I'm going for it. So I did. I bought 5 warm blooming Cymbidiums, all in spike.

I feel better about these. They are all clones, so they are proven performers and most definitely bloom in the summer when it is hot, but man I'm still nervous I made a bad decision lol. But if yours make it, then I know I can do it too. You give me strength and courage, Coconuts. I need you to succeed.

I like the move I made taking them to the lath house... we shall see

Bleeping Hurricane isaias may mess everything up and force me to move A LOT of plants into a two car garage that is already full....I lose a lot of flowers and spikes and new growths everytime I have to “hunker down”...I hope it misses us

Hurricanes terrify me. I grew up in Oklahoma, and tornadoes don't bother me. I'm used to them. They happen and it's just a part of life in that area, plus they are actually REALLY cool to watch if they are far enough away from you that you aren't in danger. And the path of destruction of a tornado is relatively narrow. You have to be right in the path of the tornado to have a problem, and your chances of being right in the path of the tornado are rather low.

Hurricanes, however, are inescapable. They're so big, and if a hurricane is coming, you can't just hide out in a safe spot in your house and hope that it will miss. The hurricane won't miss you. Their path of destruction is so huge. If a tornado is coming, your chances of getting hit are low. If a hurricane is coming, your chances of getting his are about 100%. I hate hurricanes.

It’s all about the devil you know as opposed to the one you don’t

I have lived here 37 years and seen all the manner of storms from false alarms, to near misses to Hurricane Andrew which completely destroyed my house and I had to live in a rental for two and half years

My house is a bunker (impact windows, no hips in the roof design, and shutters ) so, to your point, J. You do what you can to prepare bc after that if it’s coming, it’s coming lol

I’ll take them over earthquakes any AND everyday of the week...at least I get a week of notice

Yeah, but earthquakes are over in seconds... it seems like forever but a minute would be a huge one... And earthquakes don't kill (Falling masonry kills, that's why we build with very little hard heavy stuff like that) So I guess I'm fine with the devil I know...

Earthquakes don't bother me. We had them in Oklahoma all the time from the oil fracking. I actually thought they were kind of cool. But ours were small, and typically caused no damage at all, or just minor damage.

i have this conversation all the time with a friend in New York and I tell you, i would take all these tropical cyclones over just a few blizzards too!

he then reminds me that i compete with sharks for food so my judgment is not to be trusted ( i don't really, but that's how he defines spearfishing LOL)
