Thank you! You are right, I really don't see how I can crop that either, and as most orchids spikes are upright, most of my pics are in the wrong orientation too

Damn. I'd love to submit some pics, but my camera only goes up to 1800 x 1200 pixels.

Should I bother? It seems like my pics, at that printing resolution, would end up looking kinda crappy.

Of course you should! My wife had a 15" photo printed up from a jpg file sized for 7" by mistake, and I honestly could not fault it!

So while your camera is sized for a 6" print, it should do twice that at a stretch, providing you use the best quality recording mode on your camera (usually tiff).

Sue, as Weng said, make sure your camera is set to take the biggest and best quality it has to offer. There are several options here.

1. I have a very good program with an algorithm that does the best job I've seen for upsizing images. You'd need only a 25% increase in width to get to the 2300 desired pixels. If you'll take and crop the picture to width:height ratio of 2300:1800, then you can send it/them to me and I'll increase the size for you. Also as Weng said, if you can take the image in tiff format, you won't lose anything to jpeg compression. If your only option in the camera is jpeg, then once you have the image like you want it, save it as a tiff so there won't be any more compression and send it to me.

1. Another option (don't know if it would be allowed) is to take 2 different pictures (different flowers) in portrait position (taller than wide) and combine them into one image side by side. We'd have to see what Meg thinks of that. I would be happy to put them into one file as side by side images for you.

Ok, I used GIMP to size/crop the images. I did put one split photo in there. The TIFs will be sent in shortly.

I sent mostly pics of unusual and tiny orchids, not so much "pretty" orchids. They seem to be my best photos. I doubt they'll be the ones chosen, but I thought it might be fun to have some . . . more unlikely options.

Attached below is a pic of Chamaeangis (syn. Microterangis) hariotiana.

I hope we'll get to see all the entries!

Very nice ! Once all the entries are in, I'll post a link to gallery and we can start voting/rating the photos This way the best rated photos will be in the calendar.
