Not sure if it's a matter of sensibilities or the difference between "like" and "LOVE" but even if there was an entire circle of beefcake chippendales surrounding an orchid growing on a tree I'd still click on the photo. Of course, I too would draw the line somewhere...and when it comes to advertising it's important to appreciate the sensibilities of your target audience.

Which brings us to the question of who the target audience is anyways....conservative, rich, retired, married ladies...liberal, single, gay guys in college...or some other group? If you asked each society member you'd probably get a wide range of target groups...and the results of a public survey might differ from the results of a completely anonymous survey.

And the results of a survey of members might differ from the results of people who only showed up for 1 or 2 meetings. For example, I've talked with a couple people who stopped attending my society's meetings because there weren't enough young members. Some people seem to have difficulty relating to people outside of their social group. Personally, as a kid I spent a lot of time with my grandparents and have nothing but love for old people.

So if you feel your local orchid society is overly dominated by one social group...then facebook ads can provide you with the opportunity to correct your society's lopsided demographics.

Post a pic of cattleya labiata orchid, (with the name showing) and see what kind of clicks you get.

I don't even bother with facebook period. I have very little interest in it and have enough trouble trying to find time to check my email more than once every couple weeks.

I don't know how much space you're allowed, but this is what i'd do:

- Use the word ORCHID somewhere prominently
- Use strong, contrasting colours
- Use a picture of an orchid that is recognisable to the casual windowsill grower - An Epicat might not be recognisable as an orchid by most of the target market.
- If it's for an auction, include the date so people know the ad is current.
- Use a location somewhere so people know that it's local.
- Use the word free somewhere
- NOT use the word 'society' somewhere, that sounds exclusive and unwelcoming, even if it's not.

P.S. I voted for the breasts standing next to the tree (oh there was an orchid?)

Undergrounder...those are all good points and the picture is great. However, facebook really shrinks the pictures down though so it wouldn't work for that...but it would be perfect for other publicity outlets.

I voted for the Encylia, it's superb. I didn't like the Den with the boobs attached.

Flickr wouldn't let me see the man with the stanhopea......hmmmmm I wonder what he was wearing????

I clicked on Guy with Stanhopea, and was taken to a flickr page that said "Adult Content. Must be signed in to view" Seriously.

No issues signing up for flickr, though.
