So have I, however, I don't even have one of those either.... Maybe we can all go out and buy those microwavable betty crocker cake things!! kidding.. however, those are good when in a pinch! Don't worry, I'll be sure to get an oven quickly. I don't think I'm going to survive, and my poor fiance has been living there for about a year without one.. I made him promise that will be our first purchase for the house.

I remember the days without an oven! We managed with a microwave, a Camping gaz and a slow cooker for about six weeks when I got my first flat with the then fiance - it was great fun, but baked goods were probably off the menu for the duration!

I hope you will be very happy together - congratulations

My worst time was going 3 months without cabinets and countertops. I was using a laundry tub for a sink and open book cases for pantry storage. Thank goodness there was a range and refrigerator.

Didn't have a microwave for the first few years after moving out on my own. In the beginning they were so heavy and didn't have rotating plates. Microwaves aren't useful for quality baked goods but they can reduce the prep time for baked recipes. They're handy for melting ingredients like butter and chocolate.

Of course they're great for reheating when you need a quick meal. Over the years I've discovered that many people don't know that you can cook delicious, more nutritious corn on the cob in them. You don't peel the husk...just chop off each end and leave the husk on. Pop it in the micro for about 3 minutes per ear. The newer models are more powerful. Power level 8 works nicely now-a-days. Up to 3 ears can be cooked at a time by placing them in a triangular pattern, but the cooking time should not be multiplied by each ear of corn. It depends on your oven. Three ears only require about 5 minutes on level 8 in mine. Be sure to use oven mitts after they're done. Peeling is simple and straggler silks can be easily removed with a damp paper towel.

Peeled corn can be microwaved too, but it must be securely wrapped in a few layers of damp paper towels first.

I have a good recipe for banana orange nut bread. It contains a variety of healthy ingredients...one being wheat bran which might be too strong for unacquired taste buds. It is good though, and in the past I've successfully substituted less intensely flavored oat bran for the wheat bran. It makes a great breakfast bread, but has been known to satisfy hunger most any time of day. It can be eaten chilled or at room temperature, and my personal favorite is toasted with layer of low fat cream cheese. I believe it's a 2 loaf recipe, but the cooking time can be adjusted for smaller loaves or various sized muffins. Let me know if anyone is interested and I'll dig out the recipe.

Nick (the fiance) thinks that I'm absolutely crazy. 1.) For my obsession with orchids, and that an orchid forum actually exists, and that I belong to it. and 2.) That we're discussing baked goods and pets on the forum as well. But no worries, he's purely excited about baked goods. However, he will not eat ANYTHING with nuts in it (trust me, I've even tried grinding up pecans in my graham cracker crust for my pumpkin cheesecake -side note, he loves pumpkin- and he tried it, and realized that they were in it... he then refused to eat ANY of the cheesecake) He's stubborn, but I must admit that I don't like most nuts in baked goods, it sort of depends. For instance, white chocolate macadamia nut cookies, are a weakness of mine.
