Coelogyne Usitana Sibling semi hydro? Female
Smile Coelogyne Usitana Seedling semi hydro?

Hello everyone!

I'm quite a beginner and I am getting my first ever sibling.
It is a coelogyne usitana, orchid that I am completely in love with.
I wanted to ask you about the substrate to put it in. In my understanding this orchid needs a moist substrate and siblings are usually put in sphagnum moss. The thing is, I am changing most of my orchids to semi hydro and that would make sense to me due to the requirements of the orchid. But, I don't know if siblings do not stand this technique.

Anybody tried it? ideas?

thanks!!

It appears that you have misunderstood the term "sibling", or that's not really what you're intending to say.

A "sibling" is nothing more that a plant with the same genetic background as another - just like sisters and brothers. When one plant is pollinated, there are a multitude of offspring, and they are all siblings. The term is most often used when one of those "brothers and sisters" is used to pollinate the flower of another; the offspring are typically labeled as " (plant name) x sib. And while there are always some minor variations in the cultural needs of each and every one of those siblings, generally speaking, they are close.

If you are, instead, intending to refer to the plant as a "seedling", and you know you have the correct overall cultural conditions that meet the requirements of the plant, about the only impact of it being a seedling is that you need to make sure it gets what it needs more consistently.

I'm sorry, you are totally right, I chose the wrong word. I was intending to say "seedling". In general I can give to the orchid the overall conditions it needs. So, basically I can put a seedling in semi hydro, just need to be more careful, isn't it?

If a plant doesn't have a well developed root system when I transition it to semi-hydro I'll either make certain to top water regularly or plant it deeper in the pot until it gets established. For Coelogyne and a few others specifically, I would wait until new roots start growing before transitioning it.

I haven't grown Coelogyne usitana. A lot of Coelogyne species have very long rhizomes between pseudobulbs, and grow horizontally very fast. It would be hard to keep a plant like this in semi-hydro. Does this species grow like this?
