Hello sbrofio the media i used was just small chunks of deteriorated cedar wood and a composted leaf mold from my backyard. I do a 50/50 mix. I am from the Seattle, WA area and cedar trees are very common. Cedar trees do not rot but they deteriorate slowly. The leaf compost is a mix of my japanese maple trees. We barely have any types of deciduous trees out here in the Emerald City(hence the nick name for Seattle). I microwave the mixture to kill off any bugs hiding in it. That's the mix that I use.

YAY....another Pleione grower from the greater Seattle area! I've used decomposed Japanese maple leaf compost also, but tend to add charcoal bits, crushed limestone grit, perlite and commercial small bark. What are you using to feed your Pleiones during the growing season? I've used water-change water from my tropical fish tanks but this year I'm going to be experimenting with Dyna-Gro GROW formula after getting an order from The Gardens at Post Hill and being amazed at the size of their Pleione psbs! That's what their Pleione grow sheet recommends.
