Pleione maculata -- It is so cute! I love pleiones and I thought I would never be able to have this species because it is so difficult to find for sale in the US. I got it on my recent vacation to San Francisco.

What a Beautiful bloom. I'm in love with Pleiones! They are such wonderful species and so easy to take care of. I have been looking for maculata for some time now. I'm near San Francisco. Do you mind telling me where in SF you got it from?

Wow, so gorgeous!

I had one of these a few years back but never got it to flower and it didn't make any new growths and just died back. I can grow other pleione's and even though I tried to treat this differently (being an autumn bloomer) I couldn't find the right conditions for it. Will have to try again sometime as they are more easily available here.

Thanks everyone! I got it from Golden Gate Orchids, a fantastic orchid nursery with an unbelievably helpful owner. The visit was one of the highlights of my vacation.

I'm not a pleione expert, but here's my . I've been keeping it outside starting late summer, where the temps were getting increasingly cooler, down to 50-60 deg F. I noticed three little white lumps that grew bigger and bigger over the past couple of weeks. The plant should be losing its leaves soon--technically, it's supposed to drop all its leaves before blooming--and I will soon be giving it a winter rest of around 45 degrees. I heard it should stay warmer than other pleiones (correct?) meaning I don't need to give it the fridge treatment.

I've had a Pleione praecox that grew nicely until this summer, I had to go away for 2 months for work, so my folks were taking care of my plants. Unfortunately one months after I left, I heard news that one of my plants developed "black rot." Too bad it was my pleione.

I hope I have better luck with this one!

I believe you are right that these should be warmer over the winter. I was told a cool window-ledge. I keep my others in a shoe box in the greenhouse which is down at 5C, sometimes cooler in the winter. I think keep mine too cold is the reason mine failed.

Very pretty! If you can grow that in MD I should be able to grow it in VA.
