Default Coel. mayeriana update ~ 'Robert Bailey' CHM/AOS

Hey Everyone,

I have an update on my Coel. mayeriana.

I went to the judging center at AOS headquarters this past Saturday with it and I actually won an 84 point CHM (Certificate of Horticultural Merit) on it. It is the first time this species has been recognized by the AOS, and I am thrilled by the honor.

I have actually been waiting for the timing to be right for blooming because the flowers only last about 10 days for me once the entire spike opens. I finally got it with 6 blooms and one bud.

Here are some photos I took today; one is a close up and the other the whole plant. Although it is growing in a 4 inch pot, I have it situated ina 10 inch pot to support its sprawling habit.

It is now Coel. mayeriana 'Robert Bailey' CHM/AOS

Enjoy, David

Congratulations on your award, David! That sure is a neat plant you have there. I think I'm gonna snag myself one of these during my next haul. Looks very similar to pandurata, but judging from the pot dimensions you just gave, it seems much smaller and more manageable than pandurata.

Long time, no see, by the way. I hope all is well with you.

Hi Carl,
Thanks for the kudos on my award. This plant and flower are actually very similar to pandurata. As you've pointed out the plant is a bit smaller; however it is more of a sprawler than pandurata. Also, the flowers are smaller and have some subtle differences in their lip structures.

I have been very busy with my orchid judging studies and adventures; hence my absence here. Just this month I've judged 3 shows; Guatemala City for their national show, Boca Raton and Miami...I also got to help RF set up their big display at the Miami show and I gave my first presentation to the rest of the judges at the West Palm Beach judging center.

Boy am I glad February is over...now it's on to my local show here in Naples, where I am putting a hobbyist floor display in, plus I'm the show committee judging chair and I'm participating in judging the show. The weekend after that is my usual monthly judging class and judging in Del Ray.

So, as you can see, I am a busy guy when it comes to my passion for chids!

Congratulations on your award and your beautiful, well grown plant David. When is your show in Naples? We will be vacationing in Florida this month and may have to add this to our plans! I think we will be going to Fairchild's Orchid Fest as well...getting the shakes already.

I have a C asperata that is growing new growths. I put is as well in a coco fiber pot inside a clay pot...
if you ever a small extra division of your mayeriana let me know! i love all the Coelogynes at the BBG.
how do you grow it so healthy? spotless leaves!
