Default C. Cristata flower spikes die

Dear all,

I have just noticed to my great sadness that all three flower spikes on my Cristata died out and died, even though water was sufficiently supplied. Could it be that it’s a light issue? It’s sitting on a NNW facing window with temps are pins 15-18 degrees Celsius.

I’m so sad!!

Light might be a factor if it's so intense that it burns them, but I doubt that's an issue this time of year in Berlin.

In my experience, there are three things that most commonly result in spike loss: extremely low humidity, pests, or ethylene in the environment due to ripening fruit or a out-of-tune gas flame.

Hm, none of these ally at all. The flower spikes were doing totally fine and then at one point just ceased growing and now I realized they just dried up and died.

It may have been due to too much moisture or water being trapped in the joint between the bulb and the spike.

Otherwise, the plant may be too weak to sustain the flowers or it may have undergone a sudden change in conditions.
