Default Blc. Burdekin Wonder ‘Lakeland’ ?

The plant came labeled as Blc. Burdekin Wonder ‘Lakeland’ from a reputable cattleya grower, a couple years ago, in a 2.5” pot. This is it’s first time blooming and it does not look like Burdekin Wonder. Yes it is white, with a yellow throat, but the purple end of the lip is not supposed to be there. I would not think this grower would mistake/mislabel plants.

Could this color difference be becaused by cultural/environmental conditions? I know that temperature and/or fertilizer can cause color anomalies like flares and petal tips, which I do see on the petal edges. But can this, cause this amount of color difference?
Or is this just mislabelled and is some other hybrid all together?

Very nice looking flower! But --- following your hunch here --- I believe that this plant is not what the tag says it is.

On the other hand --- hard to say what happened. The supplier to the seller may have supplied the wrong clonelings.

Or - if repeated mericloning had occurred ---- and maybe the seller knows the source of this plant --- then mutation could have occurred. There are certainly cases of mutation. But - on the other hand - if you were looking to purchase the plant for the usual white feature and no purple, then we can definitely say that this plant is not (or no longer) like the original plant.

I was just participating in another thread on orchidboard yesterday - regarding grex ----- and I know that it's not unusual for some orchid labs from some places overseas to send out plants that aren't actually clones of the original plant. Or mutation occurred due to repeated mericloning etc.

I was participating in the 'what is a grex' thread within OrchidBoard yesterday, and gave examples of issues where the general public purchased plants that had a particular name on the tag, but the flowers on their purchased plant are too much unlike what the expected flower is supposed to look like (taking into considerations of variation due to culture) --- not just colour features, but also fringe pattern on the lips etc.

An example was this person (here) mistakenly thinks their plant is what the tag says it is.

The actual plant's flower should look like this: (here).

And a different case where another person mistakenly thinks they have a particular plant - (here).

While the actual plant's flower should look like: (here).

I am sorry to say you do not have a Burdekin Wonder ' Lakeland'. I have enclosed my plant and the photo of the genuine Burdekin Wonder ' Lakeland'.

Thank you for the responses. That is what I thought, mislabelled, sometimes that does happen. We do have another plant that is labeled Burdekin Wonder from the same grower that is a year younger. So maybe we will get one then, or maybe not. I am not complaining about this one, I do like the bloom and it is fragrant, a light rose like scent.

Me too! I really like that extra colour contrast with the purple. If your other plant is the real 'Lakeland', then you'll have best of both worlds! Win-Win situation.

It amazes me what comes out of these hybrid crosses. Went and looked up the parents of Burdekin Wonder = Rlc. Donna Kimura (photo 1) X Rlc. Sylvia Fry (photo 2) neither one of these is even white. But Sylvia Fry does have C. Bow Bells in it, which is a well known white.
