Cattleya bicolor brasiliensis
This is the second plant of this species in my collection to bloom. And just in time for the onslaught of the summer's Japanese Beetles (sigh...). I've had it inside for the last few days while the segments expanded. Now it's sitting on the front porch, producing lots of perfume to attract the beetles.

Lovely flowers. I have never seen Japanese Beetles on our orchids however they sure like the roses and a variegated vine we have growing up the side of our house.

First, this is a beauty. They can get rather tall. The footprint stays reasonable (not a rambler) but canes can easily get to 24 inches (60 cm) |

Congratulations! I'll bet the fragrance is wonderful. How long does the bloom usually last?
Japanese Beetles are a pain.

Thank you for all of your comments, everyone. Yes, they do get tall, but as Roberta indicated, they are not (thankfully) ramblers. Nothing like the intensely frustrating growth habit of Cattleya walkeriana. Cattleya bicolor is also very fragrant and the flowers last for almost a month for me.

Sounds perfect. I like my tall orchids. I have a few of the taller bifoliate species (seedlings though in 3” pots), or my Den lasianthera that’s pushing 30” and still just a wee baby 
As long as it’s not a rambler AND tall. That would get annoying. Thanks! |
