C. Shipbuilder's Oatmeal Stout
Default C. Shipbuilder's Oatmeal Stout coerulea

...it finally bloomed for me!

Bought as Lc. Shipbuilder's Oatmeal Stout 'coerulea', but since Laelia purpurata has been reclassified as Cattleya purpurata, it must be C. It's 75% C. purpurata and 25% C. warneri. It seems to have inherited bloom shape and color primarily from C. purpurata, while the C. warneri genetics makes for an overall smaller plant than C. purpurata.

It's supposed to be fragrant, but I don't detect anything from mine - but then, it is a first time bloomer, so maybe next year? The blooms are 5+ inches across, but as you can see, the petals curl back a bit (it's freshly opened). I do like the colour, though.

Yeah, it seems a bit random to name an orchid after a beer which it resembles neither in colour nor fragrance.

I like horror movies. Maybe I should make a new cross and name it after a favourite title. How does Lc. Mountain of the Cannibal God sound? No?

I’ve wondered about ‘Hairy Pig’ myself. That name doesn’t conjure up the most attractive image in my mind.

My mom had a climbing yellow rose in her backyard for many years. It was called Golden Showers. How’s that for an unfortunate name?

Here he is again - this time with a friend: Psychopsis Mariposa 'GV'.

Since opening, Shipbuilder's Oatmeal Stout coerulea has indeed proven to be fragrant - from midday through the afternoon. It's a light, sweet fragrance that can best be described as 'orchid' - not rose, not hyacinth, not spicy. Orchid.
