Default Rlc. (Potinara) Gene Crocker 'Red Prince'

This is a cross named in honour of the great hybridizer Gene Crocker from Carter and Holmes who helped produce so many outstanding hybrids including Oconee and MacHolmes.

A true red with a wonderful shape, measuring around 9 cm. I have seen some in AQ plus (AOS awards) with pink flowers to orange to reds. Parents are Slc. Newberry Promise 'Gene's Baby' and Pot. Newberry Delight 'Mendehall' AM/AOS...

Another great cross from the House of C&H!!

What is unique about this second bloomed seedling is that the lip is waxy, not velvety like the other awarded cultivars of this cross. Also lightly fragrant.

It is also a very small Cattleya, with S. coccinea figuring almost 1/4 of it's genetics, about 6 inches tall and small footprint. Great for windowsill!

A lovely red. Bonus that a small plant produces that!

Thanks all... there's a new growth coming so it looks like it will be a constant bloomer.

It's spring and the plant flowered on one of two new growths! Only one flower, but what a really nice shape and deeper colour!

Flower is rounder and about 9.5 cm NS, a half cm bigger than last flowering. If it's still in good shape, I will bring to AOS judging in 2 weeks.

Today the flower has stretched to 9.5 cm and filled in the shape better to a circle.

Really a pretty one. The petals are much rounder, yes, it's coming along nicely. It sure does take a few blooming's sometimes before you get what you want. I have a mini red that when it bloomed the first two times I was not happy with it and was thinking of finding a new home for it. It just bloomed for the third time and it's much nicer, however the bloom is facing in a funny direction. I believe I'll be keeping it for now.

Cattleyas are finicky in terms of producing their best blooms. It might take 3 seasons to bloom at it best. It seems like the combination of strong roots, nutrients, light, humidity and a dash of good luck are needed to create the perfect storm of the best blooms. Sometimes after that, it may never get to that perfection, especially after it gets an AOS award lol!
