Care tips for cattleya dormaniana? - Orchid Board

Just picked one up from the AOS show here... not sure what to do with it... i grow catts outside usually... but maybe keep inside in winter? or can it handle winter temps at 40's? low humidity ok or really prefers a gh? Light?

From what I've researched and looks, seems more intermediate and may need higher humidity than i can provide... but definitely want to hear how others are growing it...

I love cattleyas with this sort of form- narrow growths with two leaves at top and a weird alien flower, just so cool! hopefully i can grow it... just wish it could flower more than one time year lol

I have never grown this one so I have no idea. If you know the name of the vendor, maybe you could contact them and ask. Here is the IOSPE data:

thanks for the bump and the info... I figured there would be growers of this species here... guess we'll just see anyone chimes in... For now I can give it more standard catt care along lines of what I've found online... the vendor told me info at show but sorta forgot lol... i'll probably email him once they're over the craziness of the weekend show...

I have never heard of it but what a cool looking flower. I hope you get it to bloom and then we can see it.

I've grown a few dorminianas over the last 10 years and they are not cold tolerant. They are warm growers (16-35C) and no rest period. They like high humidity around their roots and do not like to dry out unlike other bifoliates. See my posts on them through the search engine here ...

Thanks leslie... yeah I did a search and not much came up before... then I just did a search again and saw posts... not sure if I spelled it wrong the first time around... so wow, yeah, not a cold grower... fine I can keep it in the windowsill... second challenge is the humidity, can have streaks of dry 20% days for weeks here and there, otherwise 60% plus...so we'll see. sad to hear it's challenging but who knows, maybe it would be happy with me... (I'm always hopeful despite how many losses I've had LOL)

I did get it in bloom, so attached is the flower. It was a bit rough from the show and travel and heat, but nonetheless appreciate the bloom. Hopefully it'll bloom for me next year...
