Laelia (Cattleya) purpurata, Carmencita x sib
This is my third purpurata I got this plant 2 years ago as a single lead, first bloom seedling. This year it is blooming with 4 spikes, each with 5-6 flowers.
It is significantly larger than my other two, with flowers about 7" (17 cm) across.
And yet, two weeks ago I saw one even larger. I visited Greater Philadelphia OS, and one of their members brought in a purpurata, that received an AM in 2015. That flower was 20 cm across, and 21 cm vertical. Unfortunately I did not have my camera with me.

Wow big blooms. It's so pretty. Sounds like there is allot of difference in the plants.

It is fairly common for species with widespread geographical distribution to show considerable variation, both in size and color forms. My other two purpuratas are in the 5-6" size range.
Another factor is number of flowers on the spike, at least for smaller plants. I have had Cattleyas bloom with anywhere from 1 to 4 flowers on the spike. The single flower always produces the greater natural spread.
Obviously, plant size/health has some impact as well. The 'Carmencita' x sib plant is considerably larger than the other two.

Very nice! I had a 'Carmencita' cross that was a huge plant. It grew next to carnea variety that was half the size.

I do think the big ones are very nice, I have a hybrid that is quiet large. But I kind of hate to get too many that are so big one can't find room for them. If people can grow them outside then you could do it. I never know how large some of these species get.

Beautiful blooms and so many!
I have a number of standard size Catts that are so much larger than when I bought them as near bloom size seedlings or younger. I find they only reach their full potential when they are much larger. At least in my growing conditions.

At our last society meeting Amy Chung Jacobsen spoke about Laelia purpurata. She said it needs to be in at least a 10" / 250mm diameter pot to achieve full potential. I took lecture notes and posted them here:
