Default Blc. Chia Lin 'New City'

Thought I'd share a photo of my Chia Lin since a few growers in an earlier thread in this forum mentioned that they were having a difficult time blooming their plant. The flower on the right just opened so the color may not yet have reached its full potential. The other flower is just opening. This plant was purchased as a mericlone seedling in a 4-inch pot from Kodama Orchid Nurasery in Waianae, Hawaii in February 2004. The plant which must be at least 12 years old has bloomed at least 4 times before. The flower has a sweet fragrance. The plant is growing in a 8-inch plastic pot with bark as the media.

Very nice.

On a plant at least 12 years old and blooming approx. 4 times, assuming that is once a year. It makes me wonder if these just need to be quite mature before they bloom. I'm assuming from Hawaiian Sunshine's comments that the plant may have been 7 or 8 years old before first bloom.

So maybe mine, even tho it is a decent size, is just not mature enough. I think it is getting close since it finally produced a large sheath and two buds that died when tiny on the last growth. It has very quickly produced another good sized growth so maybe on that one I will finally see a bloom.

I'll enjoy this picture in the meantime

Here is an updated photo of my Chia Lin in full bloom. The photo was taken this afternoon (Friday) which is 5 days after the photo I took on Sunday to open this thread. The flowers have a very pleasant fragrance.

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. It is New Year's eve in Hawaii and the Chia Lin is still fresh and fragrant as ever. Happy New Year everyone!
