Green Cattleya NOID leafless pseudobulb blooming! Male
Default Green Cattleya NOID leafless pseudobulb blooming!

Well, this green cattleya grew a new pseudobulb and a sheat but no leaf, well just a tiny piece of a leaf. Stopped growing and a new lead appeared next to it. But the sheat stayed green and now it has two buds!!!!

Why a pseudobulb without a leaf? And I see (indeed is obvious but now it´s in front of my eyes) that all the leaves and pseudobulbs are sharing energy for the leafless pseudobulb to get his blooming season. This is team work!! NICE!!!!

We will see how will develop the flowers...

Regards

Mario

That's interesting. Hybrids have such a varied gene pool that they do odd things like that. It's wonderful that you have two buds! Looking forward to the bloom photos!

If it were my plant I would find someone to propagate this by seed. You never know what genetic mutation made it do this and you might get a line of plants with very small leaves while producing larger flowers. Interesting to see what you'ld get.

I would suppose that, while making this particular season's growth, the plant underwent some sort of cultural event which caused a deformation of these leads....this caused the psuedobulb to form, but with no or stunted leaf growth....fortunately, the bloom is grown INSIDE the psuedobulb, and with a normal psuedobulb development, you got blooms...I would think back to the last year of culture, and try to remember if there was a mis-application of chemicals, fertilizer or additive, that could have caused this event....good luck, and post the bloom pics!

That's very unusual but then I've seen orchids do lots of unusual things. The buds look good. I'd love to see what the flowers look like.

Thanks!!! To me it was a surprise, I supposed that the sheat just dry. Indeed, we will see when the buds open.

I´m not sure if it is a mutation, I share the idea about to wait until buds open. But sure your idea (small plant, big flowers) is a nice one.

Indeeeeed!!!, I want to know if the flower size it would be more or less the same. It seems to me that will not get the normal size.

I´m thinking back and I don´t remember any change on my growing schedule. Something environmental, like a temperature dropping or elevating (but weird because here we have two seasons, hot and hotter :-) ) it will be the second time that this plant is blooming after repotting and I don't use chemicals. I think that as you wrote, is something about the growing period, maybe too hot weather, that the lead was in extreme situations and then stopped, growing another lead (you can see it growing next to it), but because watering, climate, the lead decided to grow again. We must to see how the buds will develop. Today are ok, growing and with nice purple tips...

Certainly, and I wish that the flowers will be ok... I mean, with the same shape and color, but I think they will not have the same size. We will see...

It might have Cattleya walkeriana as a parent (or distant grandparent). This is one of the few Cattleyas that bloom like this naturally. C. walkeriana blooms from a new growth with no leaves just like the picture you show.

Thanks Ryan! I appreciate your lines. I saw walkeriana pics and it seems the same situation with my plant. I don´t know the hybrid name, but it seems Ports of Paradise. I will check if there is walkeriana blood in it.

Updating news with this plant. Well, Nature is wise. The older bud blasted and dropped. The only bud is growing and it seems that it would have a normal size. I suppose plant decided just to save energy for one bud and focus to let the new lead growing to mature and, I hope, get ready for new buds to bloom.

Indeed I will post pic soon.

Regards!!!

Here is the flower!!!!

LOVELY!!! The flower is as good as always. Normal size, terrific lip... I love it!!! As you can see, the sheat turned black. By the way this is a NOID, but I suppose it's a Ports of Paradise. But it hasn´t fragrance.

Hope you enjoy it!!!
